Biography

British baritone Michael Lafferty is an acclaimed artist whose career is highlighted by company debuts with Glyndebourne Festival Opera, Scottish Opera, and English National Opera.

Michael is a graduate of the Opera School at The Guildhall School of Music and Drama, following studies in Berlin with Thomas Quasthoff at the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler. He has been generously supported by The Behrens Foundation, The Drake Calleja Trust, and the Countess of Munster Musical Trust.

On the operatic stage, Michael recently made his Glyndebourne debut as Officer in Dialogues des Carmélites and his Scottish Opera debut as Janek in The Makropulos Affair. Other celebrated roles include Joseph de Rocher (Dead Man Walking) and Black (Black el Payaso), which earned him an OffWestEnd Award nomination. Other roles include Older brother (Dead Man Walking) for English National Opera and Des Grieux (Portrait de Manon) for Guildhall Opera School.

A strong presence in competitions, Michael was a finalist for the prestigious 2021 Kathleen Ferrier Awards and the GSMD Gold Medal 2023. He has won numerous first prizes, including the Guildhall English Song Prize and the ‘Prix Andre-Bacand Prize’ at the CMIM Competition 2022.
